Database Googlers?
Like a lot of people, I watch Google closely because I think they make great software, they're moving at a blazing pace, and they're building cutting edge technology. If you can't see what's coming next by reading the news releases, read between the lines by checking out some of these Database papers written by Google technologists.

Open Source in Indian IT
I write for various magazines and publications including an Indian online and print magazine called EFY India which is a bit like our state-side Linux Journal. It's incredible the coverage, and interest in Open Source there. It has grown by leaps and bounds and for good reason. I also found this interesting article at Express Computer Online Why Indian companies should sponsor Open Source projects. We see this sponsorship type model happening more and more and one can see why. It develops a real user and developer community which often leads to better quality software, and software the more often meets the real-world needs of users than those often dictated by market research.
Here's another example. CA recently sponsored a million dollar challenge to write the best tools for their open sourced database Firebird. Indian programmers took top honors for their Open Source migration utilities. That database will certainly be an interesting one to watch.

Wider Open Source Potential
I've just found this interesting UK site called Demos full of free publications. One in particular talks about the wider potential for Open Source methodologies to stimulate change.
Other fields have much to learn from open source methods – because they bring principles and working methods which can help to produce better knowledge, goods or services, or make them available on more widely beneficial terms.
